The contests started with the junior varsity match with the Eagles starting 3 sophomores; Keimani Rayford, Brandi Thomas, and Jamia Washington and four freshmen; Niama Bocage, Demi Johnson, Kenya Thomas and Laylah Luke (libero). The Eagles and Patriots each won a game sending the match to a third set where the young Lady Eagles stepped up to the challenge to win the match. With that type of determination, the future looks bright for Warren Easton Volleyball.
The winning continued with an experienced varsity team taking the court. After losing only two starters from last season, there are high expectations for the 2020 team, and they started it off right. The Eagles swept the Patriots in 3 straight games, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22, to start the year 1-0. The Eagles made a change from last year’s 5-1 offense to a 6-2 look. Using both the setting and hitting talents of senior Celeste Metoyer, and junior Lajai Wilson the Eagles increased their attacking power. Metoyer had 26 assists and 4 kills, and Wilson recorded 28 assists and 2 kills. The increased ability to attack from the right side helped the Eagles, but the strength of their attacking power came from the middle. Senior, Kennedy Wells made a statement yesterday with 9 kills and 3 blocks controlling the middle of the net. Junior, Jamyra Tyler also had a strong game with 5 kills of her own. Returning outside hitters Deahsyah Johnson and Tyshea Trim each with a kill, made their major contribution to the win with their outstanding passing, an area the lady’s needed to improve on and did. Adding to the outside attack this year is sophomore Nija Polk who had a kill of her own. The story would not be complete without mentioning the return of starting senior libero, Evelin Romero whose presence was felt with her 21 digs. Congratulations to the Lady Eagles.
Up next is West St. John Friday September 11 at 4:30.
Go Lady Eagles!
